The Permaculture Design Certification Course

The Permaculture Design Certification Course Ready To Skip The Revolution And Create The Renaissance?  The principles of Permaculture are commonly associated with a rural or agrarian setting, but they are applicable everywhere.  It is an adaptable set of problem-solving and decision-making ethics based on the patterns and systems of nature. When we use this approach it creates a fundamental shift in our attitude, towards how to create innovative and sustainable solutions of abundance rather than scarcity and crisis. At The Academy we forward students’ understanding of the field of scientific sustainability.  We promote: ... Thoughtful Decision-Making ... Creative Problem-Solving ... But Reject “One Size Fits All” Solutions Our Design Course uses the garden as a metaphor for learning how to balance ecosystems, building business enterprise, and establishing community resilience within an urban landscape. The Permaculture Design Certification Course is our flagship program. It is a rigorous 7-month immersive training chock full of: Hands-on Learning Real Design Projects 1-on-1 Mentorship Action-Based Solutions Dates Classes are the one weekend a month for seven months from 9 AM to 5 PM.  Instruction will take place in Los Angeles, CA. "Before taking the class I didn't have a direction for my life. The Permaculture Design Course opened up a whole new world of possibilities and gave me a new direction that I was excited and inspired by. Larry has such a charisma and is hilarious. He brings  personality and has such a good way of explaining concepts that pulls you in and grips you." -Craig Kupolsky "I always knew that I could be doing more but I wasn't sure how." After taking the course, I could see more clearly how everything is interconnected, and I’ve been able to apply the design principles to many areas of my life. I fucking love Larry. He has no filter, which made it much easier to discuss topics that can sometimes be uncomfortable. His approach and teaching style have challenged my beliefs and inspired me to live with a deeper sense of compassion and respect. - Stacy Fisher Gunn founder and CEO of Living UP "It changed the way I think about life and gave me a sense of purpose." I completed the course in March of 2017 and had revelations and affirmations about the importance of this work. I worked for years in the film industry as an actor and in script development and found myself unfulfilled. I was concerned with issues of ecology and climate and wanted to do something about it. I was able to change careers and started working for somebody I met in the course. I couldn't be happier about the change or more excited about my future! - Cameron Miller Site and Projects Manager, The Birdhouse "The Permaculture Design Course with Larry Santoyo has been an unbelievably fun and rewarding experience!" "The Permaculture Design Course with Larry Santoyo has been an unbelievably fun and rewarding experience! And you don't have to be a gardener green thumb like me to use permaculture design in what you do!" -Dakota R. "It has changed the way I think about the world... And it has made me a better business person" "Big thank you for the permaculture design training it has changed the way I think about the world..... And it has made me a better business person, something I didn't think a “gardening class” could do." -Leslie D. This program is for those seeking with strong certitude a right-livelihood. It is for those who are ready to create lasting change and learn from the foremost Permaculture instructors in the world. I'm Ready to sign up When you take the Permaculture Design Certification Course with the Academy you are getting much more than a gardening course. • Learn. Permaculture Design Certification w/ Larkspur Design

Permaculture Design Certification Wednesday, January 1, 20257:30 PM Wednesday, December 31, 20258:30 PM Learning takes place at various local farms and home properties such as Maren Cook’s urban food forest near Frick Park in Pittsburgh. The permaculture design course has been the foundational hallmark of permaculture education for the past four decades. Permaculture brings together food production and ecological restoration, helping gardeners, farmers and land stewards see how we can create solutions to food inequality, climate change and the ecological crisis. Through permaculture we can all learn to care for the earth, care for other people and do it with justice and equity. With a deep understanding of nature and ecology, permaculturists develop human managed systems to grow more food, support more biodiversity and make positive impacts in their communities. Our permaculture course is taught as a partnership with Three Sister’s Permaculture, Garfield Community Farm and Larkspur Design with certification through the Permaculture Institute of North America. Learning to map a design takes place in the second half of the course. Pay Deposit Now! Beginning in 2024 our permaculture design course has been spread throughout the year with a monthly weekend intensive, usually on Saturdays. Each year’s cohort includes eight to fifteen students committed to finishing their PDC on calendar year. Instead of doing 80 hours of classwork in an intense two week course we’re spreading the classes throughout the year, giving students time to read, experiment, learn and ask questions between classes. We believe this model for the PDC will create better learning and teaching environments and it will allow students to go deeper into the practices and theory of permaculture throughout the course. The thirteen classes listed below will usually take place on the forth Saturday of each month. Some classes include a full day on the previous Friday and extend throughout Saturday. By completing each of the classes students will complete all other modules necessary to receive their official permaculture design certification through the Permaculture Institute of North America. The lead teachers of these classes are John Creasy of Wild Indigo Guild and Garfield Community Farm, Darrell Frey of Three Sisters Permaculture and Elizabeth Lynch of the Three Sister’s Permaculture. A very special weekend retreat happens in the spring at Lamppost Farm in Columbiana, Ohio, led by Steve Montgomery. Many other local experts will be included in select classes to augment the course, especially through local field trips. All photos are from previous courses, permaculture related field trips or of Garfield Community Farm. Integration of energy production, food and native plants! Native and edible food forest design and implementation at Garfield Community Farm The Total cost of the Permaculture Design Course is $2000 minus financial aid. A $200 deposit can be paid any time before January 10th of 2025 with $450 due in February, April, July and any remainder in October. The total course includes all of the classes below as well as a design apprenticeship at a local farm or with a local permaculture practitioner where design skills will be developed. For students looking to use permaculture design professionally, a portfolio quality design may be completed by the end of the course through the work of the apprenticeship. I just completed the online 2020 permaculture certification course and was blown away by the amount of information I gained. The information itself is a healthy mix of bass-tacks-know-how (geared towards the Northeast), theoretical, analytical, biological, philosophical, cosmic, and spiritual. Because of this, the class is suited for anyone who is interested in learning or DOING permaculture. Andrew's knowledge is vast, informative, and sobering. You can't fake that. Restoration Intensive: Fire, Forests & Animals

RESTORATION INTENSIVE: Fire, Forests, & Animal Allies March 28th-April 4th Earth Activist Training’s Restoration Intensive is an in-depth, hands-on course teaching practical land restoration skills. This year’s intensive will focus on fire resilient landscapes, erosion, stream restoration, and integrating livestock as an element of restoration.   register now ABOUT THIS COURSE Going beyond theory! This advanced hands-on permaculture course teaches practical restoration tools and techniques. Do you feel called as an Earth Healer? This course is for you.  There’s a quiet revolution going on in the woods, of communities banding together to take responsibility for their forests and grasslands, and create more safety and resilience in the face of climate-intensified wildfire.  This ten-day intensive will immerse you in one such community, focusing on deep listening to the land, hands-on skills for land restoration and practical tools to mitigate the impacts of climate change. We’ll gain experience with many aspects of forest and grassland management—understanding fire ecology, assessing the forest and fire danger, thinning, pruning, limbing up and creating shaded fuel breaks, pile burns, prescribed burns (weather permitting), working with government and other local agencies, making biochar, inoculating mushrooms, and creating other value-added products from the woods. Grazing can be one of our key tools for fire prevention and grassland regeneration when done right. In our animal care segments, we’ll have a chance to work with sheep, goats, cows, poultry and livestock guardian and herding dogs, and learn aspects of humane animal care, such as psychology,  training, fencing, and herding. COURSE FLOW Earth Activist Training teaches permaculture—ecological design—with a grounding in spirit and a focus on organizing and activism.  We have a strong commitment to social justice, equity and radical inclusion, and these values shape everything we do. Our practical skills are always taught in a context of deep listening, wonder and reverence for nature, and we include ritual, meditation and respect for the natural world as a core part of what we do. Responding to climate change is not something we can do alone, and wildfire doesn’t stop at your property line.  Community organizing is one of the key regenerative strategies.  So the culmination of our time together will be a community action day that we organize, where we can share some of our new tools with the larger community and celebrate our progress toward resilience. WHAT TO EXPECT This intensive will have two tracks: a Welcome Track for those who are taking this as a stand-alone course, and a Leadership Track for those who are taking this as part of our long-term Regenerative Land Management Program (RLM).  Our RLM students will have opportunities to take leadership on group projects, and present tools and information during our Community Action Day. The practical tools are important—but to apply them in a healing way we need both scientific knowledge and guidance from the land itself.  So each day will involve time for ritual, meditation, and listening,  to help us open our ears and hearts to what nature is telling us. This Course Is For You If: You feel anguish or despair about the climate and the state of the environment, and want to renew your spirit while learning positive solutions and practical skills. You want some time outside of the city in a beautiful environment with good food, great people, and a chance to learn new skills. You think you’d like to live on the land—but you aren’t sure, and want to try it out for a time. You live on the land—or hope to some day—and want to learn skills to regenerate it and protect it from devastating wildfire. You’ve learned the theory and taken lots of online courses during Covid—and now you want the practical experience. You want to work with animals to help heal the landscape. You want to improve your skills at animal management. You want a career in caring for the environment, forestry, fire protection or a related field. You want a career in nature education or to incorporate more nature awareness into teaching other subjects.. You are a climate activist who fears getting burned out—and want the tools to make a positive impact. You want to learn practical skills in a context that honors the spirit. You love nature—and want to do something about it.   WE ARE ALWAYS HERE TO HELP Please reach out to our Student Support Team at: support@earthactivisttraining.org. Permaculture Design Course Intensive in Santa Cruz

At the Santa Cruz Permaculture Farm & Surrounding Region Certified by PINA, the Permaculture Institute of North America, our course includes the internationally recognized 72-hour curriculum, augmented by an additional 38-hours of hands on practice and field trips. Plus, folks have the option to camp on site, and build community around the fire! Our course brings in leading designers and teachers from around the region, each experts in different areas of permaculture. The Santa Cruz Permaculture network of instructors, alumni, community partners, and resources continues to grow each season, and by participating in our course, you become part of this network! Read interviews with our alumni here to learn how folks use the skills and knowledge they gain in this course. Additionally, course participants work in teams throughout the program to design a holistic permaculture plan for a real-life site in the community.
