May 2025 Permaculture Newsletter

While headlines may be dominated by negativity, that’s not the story we witnessed last month across communities throughout the continent. Instead, we saw people coming together for Earth Month—planting seeds of resilience, regeneration, and hope—creating real, positive change right where they live.

For many of you, that spirit of action is what drew you to Permaculture in the first place—the desire to be part of the solution, to design a better future. At PINA, our mission is to nurture that spirit and stand as a beacon for transformative change.

Thanks to the dedication of members like you, and the collaboration of allied organizations, we’re turning that vision into reality.

Discover how we’re growing this movement—together.

Read on.

We are incredibly proud of the organizations we’re affiliated with. Every day, they dedicate themselves to restoring the Earth and building a better future. But during Earth Month, their efforts truly shined.

Our friends at New Roots Colorado led a transformative garden makeover at Colorado Mountain College, rallying a team of dedicated volunteers. Together, they revitalized the space into a vibrant learning garden that will empower hundreds of students with the knowledge and skills to grow their own food.

For those who embrace ritual in their celebrations, Earth Activist Training hosted their annual Earth Day Ritual—an inspiring gathering that connected people to the meaningful, powerful work being done around the world to care for and heal our planet. The event also supported their Diversity Scholarship Fund, which continues to accept contributions here: earthactivisttraining.org/donate.

Meanwhile, our partners at Pacific Rim College remind us that Earth stewardship isn’t just for April—it’s a year-round commitment. Through initiatives in Sustainable Medicine, Sustainable Living, Environmental Stewardship, Reforestation, Alternative Energy, Zero Waste practices, and local resilience, they lead by example in demonstrating how to live in harmony with the planet every day.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg! Many of our members made a significant impact during Earth Month, and we know there are countless stories worth celebrating.

We’d love to hear yours—share your Earth Month highlights with us at communications@pina.in!

Learn How You Can Transform Your Own Community

Did you know there’s one surefire way to make a real difference in the world? Start by creating change in your own community.

That’s right—global peace and resilience begin at home. When we ensure our communities have what they need, we weaken the grip of distant systems that thrive on disconnection.

Think about it: a single garden that feeds a neighbor does more than grow food. It breaks the cycle of dependency on corporate supply chains, keeping resources circulating locally instead of flowing up the corporate ladder—where profits too often fuel industries far removed from our values. Instead, that food is grown, shared, and traded within the community. Connections are made, neighborhoods are strengthened, and suddenly, the decisions of political leaders matter less—because the community has rediscovered its own power.

All this… from simply volunteering to help a neighbor plant a garden.
Small acts. Profound impact.

That’s why our upcoming Community Development Summit on May 16 & 17 is focused on the work our world needs most right now—revitalizing local connections and empowering grassroots action.

This event is designed to inspire you, equip you, and ignite the leader within. Spaces are limited, so be sure to save your spot today—because now, more than ever, the world needs leaders like you.

Permaculture in the News

Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute Named a Top Organization to Watch in 2025

The Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute (FTPI) of Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, has been honored by Food Tank as one of the “125 Food and Agriculture Organizations to Watch in 2025.”

Founded by Roxanne Swentzell, FTPI has become a beacon of resilience, blending Indigenous wisdom with permaculture principles to promote sustainable living, food sovereignty, and cultural preservation.

This recognition highlights FTPI’s impactful work in reviving traditional farming practices, seed saving, and ecological stewardship—proving that community-based, regenerative solutions are key to addressing today’s global challenges.

As the world searches for models of sustainability, FTPI stands out for its dedication to healing both land and culture through time-tested, place-based practices.
