The Roots of Permaculture
Curated by Darrell Frey, The Roots of Permaculture is a series of book reviews that will examine key references used by David Holmgren when he prepared the manuscript for Permaculture One, the pioneering seed that germinated permaculture, and by Bill Mollison in writing Permaculture Two, which further developed the permaculture concept. These two books birthed a movement that has become one of the best tools we have for restoring the Earth and ensuring a bountiful legacy for all. Familiarity with the roots of permaculture provides the serious student with a deeper understanding of permaculture design. The first book review in this series begins with The One-Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka. After the publication of Permaculture One, Bill Mollison expanded its initial concepts with Permaculture Two. Fukuoka’s work both inspired and validated the further development of permaculture. It remains essential reading, offering a deeper understanding of the possibilities of good stewardship of the land.

Contact us to let us know Permaculture showed us how to farm the land more gently. Can we do the same as we farm the sea?
As wild fish and other marine species get scarcer from overfishing and demand for ‘blue foods’ grows around the world, farming of the ocean is growing rapidly. Fish, kelp, prawns, oysters and more are now widely farmed. The world now eats more farmed seafood than wild-caught. But the booming “blue economy” is no panacea. Fish farms can pollute the water. Mangroves are often felled to make way for prawn farms. The solutions of today could turn out to be problems of the future. We cannot simply shift from one form of environmental exploitation to another. There is an alternative: permaculture. This approach has proven itself on land as a way to blend farming with healthy ecosystems. What if it could do the same on water?
Not all Permaculture Design Courses (PDCs) are created equal. Over the years, some teachers have exploited students for profit, delivering incomplete or misleading material that strays far from the core curriculum set forth by Bill Mollison. This dilution of permaculture education has not only left students underprepared but has also harmed the integrity of permaculture itself. At PINA, we uphold the highest standards. A PINA-approved PDC ensures: ✅ Authentic Curriculum – Rooted in the original teachings of Mollison and Holmgren 🌍 If you’re serious about learning permaculture the right way, choose a PINA-approved course. Check out our events page to find upcoming PDCs near you.
