Post 1: Design Contest Announcement

Proposed Image

📢Announcing 2024’s Permaculture Design Contest🌴🌻

We are excited to announce the return of PINA’s annual Permaculture Design Contest! This year’s theme is Designing for Impact and YOUR design could win up to $5000 in cash prizes!

Our goal is to support talent in design across the continent.

We want to support you with the seed money to make a major impact in your community. We all know that permaculture offers the types of solutions that no one else is bringing to the table, so let’s see YOUR design for YOUR community!

With any luck, your solution will catch on…see the full details here: 👉 https://pina.in/design_2024-pina-design-contest/

# 2 The “Polycrisis”

Proposed image

We are in the midst of what some are calling “the polycrisis”. Between weird weather, pollution overload, and inept political solutions, the world needs YOUR design solutions now, more than ever.

What design can you create that is so amazing, unique, and attractive that it reverberates throughout your entire community and beyond? Dream big for that special place in your town that needs the type of revitalization that ONLY permaculture can offer. ✨

Let us showcase your best thinking, collaborations with other local designers, and poly-solutions to the world! We want to hoist you up and share brilliant work with the continent and beyond.

What can we create together? 🧐🤝

Register and learn more here: 👉 https://pina.in/design_2024-pina-design-contest/

 #3 Permaculture at the Forefront

Proposed image

No matter what the issues or the problems are, permaculture is at the forefront of solutions. No other discipline can offer the breadth or the depth of what permaculture brings to the world in need.

Can permaculture bring brilliant solutions to affordable housing issues? Yes.

Can permaculture bring innovative solutions to land management issues? Yes!

Can permaculture revivify small towns with local economics? Yes.

The only problem is really…that the world doesn’t KNOW about it yet. Too many have given in to apathy and disconnection, but have they been impacted by the power of regenerative solutions that permaculture brings?

Now is the time to design for impact…permaculture designers: start designing and share your designs with us here: 👉 https://pina.in/design_2024-pina-design-contest/

#4  Permaculture Design + Your Community

Proposed Image

What are the particular issues that your community is facing? For me, it is affordable housing + brownfield pollution issues + economic development.

Permaculture is unique in that it crosses disciplines and can solve issues through integrated designs. Rather than one “issue” at a time. Permaculture can create holistic solutions that positively affect multiple issues.

Can you design for more hope? More connection? Beautiful natural systems AND economic opportunities? Can we create earth banks in every small town that magnetically draw people in?

Of course we can! We’re permaculture designers. Show us your best community scale, high impact design today! 👉  https://pina.in/design_2024-pina-design-contest/

When I was first learning about permaculture I desperately wanted to SEE it in action. Where could I go and see these systems functioning in the landscapes? Who had a passive heating and cooling house design that they were living in?

Try as I might, I had no luck finding these examples near my hometown. So I decided to just start…💪

It cannot be that hard and who knows, maybe my site could eventually become a demonstration site for others coming into permaculture in my wake.

One of the very first things I realized that was a limiting factor was the sheer volume and cost of plants. 🌱

I needed about $4-5k worth of plants just to fill my ⅓ of an acre. Eventually, I grew many from seed, took cuttings for others, and yes, purchased about $4,000 worth of plants. (The plant obsession still continues to this day, over a decade and a half later…can you relate? 😆)

But what if my design and the costs associated with it, had a potential funding source? Like what if I could show my design to a panel or permacuturists and they might choose to award me $5,000 right at the beginning of my design process?!

Well that is exactly the opportunity that exists today. You can apply this year, in 2024, to win up to $5k for YOUR design. PINA (The Permaculture Institute of North America) has hosted now 3 design contests, and 2024’s is the 4th.

Do you have a design that could use a boost? Do your students show promise and have a great idea worth sharing to the world?

Submissions are open August 1st… it is free to apply (you do need to be a PINA member) and what do you have to lose? https://pina.in/design_2024-pina-design-contest/

I only wish I had such an opportunity when I was getting my site setup…We can’t wait to see your Design for Impact…💥🙌🌻🪱🍄‍🟫💸

When it comes to making a BIG impact on your town, or your bioregion, permaculture offers the best potential. We can make big impacts with our designs on the water systems, soils, food systems and more.

But perhaps our biggest potential for impact is in the minds and hearts of those that experience the systems we create…💖

Perhaps they are touched by the sheer elegance and beauty…

Perhaps they are touched by the social impact of a well-thought out design that brings communities together in a meaningful way…

Perhaps their pocket books are positively affected by the lowered cost of living within well-designed permaculture systems…

And they might never know the name “permaculture”.

What if you and your permaculture design friends can create something so beautiful, impactful and amazing that it sparks a viral meme through social, local, and even national media? 📢

A set of solutions so sexy that they attract people who have zero clue what the P word is or why they should care…🌸

This is what the Permaculture Design Contest for 2024 is looking to support. Submissions are open August 1st, OR Submissions are open NOW
