The 4th annual Northeast Washington Mushroom Festival is a family-friendly event celebrating and exploring the world of fungi! This festival features a mushroom foray hunt and contests, mushroom and fungi identification table, presentations by mycologists, demonstrations, children's activities, live music, art and costume contests and lots of vendors and culinary mushrooms for sale! VENDING AVAILABLE FROM 10AM – 7PM: General vending is $44 for 12’x12’ space. Culinary mushrooms, pre-packaged food and drinks for sale are accepted but not hot or made-to-order items. Electricity is not provided. Vendors are responsible for meeting all required licenses for their products. Vending spaces sold online only until sold out. Please pack in and pack out all your personal property and keep products and space family friendly. Vendors arrive between 7:30 – 8:30am for load-in and setup. Vehicles cannot drive on field and must be parked in the parking area. Vending is open from 10:00am – 7:00pm. Vendors may leave the event after 5pm. CONTEST ENTRY FEES: The Mushroom Foray Contest entry fees are both $15 per adult and $10 per child if you register online before 5/1/26 or $20 per adult and $15 per child at the time of the event on 5/2/26. There are no fees to enter the Myco Art and Myco Costume Contests. All contest participants need to enter at the registration booth. CONTESTS: Anyone (whether in a contest or not) can bring previously harvested mushrooms from near or afar to put on the identification table but they are not added into the contest. We want to see and discuss as many types of fungi as possible. There are 4 competitions for the Mushroom Foray Contest. Contestants arrive at 9:00am to register and receive a safety briefing and maps before leaving for the foray at 10:00am. Participants return to the park by 2:00pm to identify, weigh and judge your mushrooms for the contests. Mushroom Art Contest is open to all ages and is open for judging from 3:00 – 3:15pm. No entry fee. Bring your mushroom art, drawing, photograph, painting, project, etc. Our judges will choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for prizes. Mushroom Costume Contest is open to all ages and is open for judging from 3:15 – 3:30pm. No entry fee. Contestants are encouraged to carpool and can self-assemble this at this time. At 10:00am, contest participants leave for the mushroom foray hunt and return to the park by 2:00pm to enter their mushrooms into the contest; no exceptions. Any foul play like bringing in mushrooms not picked that day will result in immediate disqualification. From 10:30am through 1:30pm, there will be three 45-minute presentations from speakers on mushroom topics such as medicinal uses, wild crafting, growing & cultivating and much more. Speakers and workshop facilitators to be announced at a later time. From 2:00 – 3:30pm, the Mushroom ID Table will be open for public display and discussion with mycologists. At 4:00pm, all contest and raffle winners will be announced at the stage. From 4:30pm until the end of the event at 7:00pm, there will be live music on the stage and vending and trading are open until 7:00pm. All participants need to have their items and trash picked up and packed up by 8:00pm. WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE UNIQUE This Permaculture Design Course offers more than a traditional learning experience. While it is designed primarily for international participants, the course also serves a broader mission. The tuition helps support our Spanish-language PDC offered throughout the year for local and national participants who would otherwise have limited access to this type of education in Costa Rica. This program provides greater access to scholarships and even offers free childcare, ensuring that families with children can also participate in permaculture education. By joining this course, students are not only investing in their own learning, but also helping expand access to regenerative education within the local community. As a nonprofit organization, our work goes beyond the classroom. Through our social outreach efforts, students participate in real-world design experiences by engaging with local projects and community members. We visit nearby farms and initiatives where permaculture principles are actively practiced, allowing participants to learn from diverse perspectives while building meaningful connections with the region. Lost Valley’s permaculture courses support people to develop a systems framework in order to integrate specialty expertise into other fields, so that we can build holistic models for stewarding our social and ecological systems. Our 12-week courses run on Saturdays which allows people who work weekday jobs to be able to participate, and provides ample time to integrate and explore the topics in between classes. Why Study at Lost Valley? What sets Lost Valley’s PDC apart from others is that  it takes place at our 36-year-old community and living permaculture site, located on 87 acres of diverse forest ecosystems. Lost Valley has been teaching PDCs since the mid 90s,  and students have the opportunity to work on real-world permaculture projects across  87 acres, gaining valuable experience in design, implementation, and management. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of permaculture principles and practices, with a focus on hands-on learning and practical application. Our instructors are highly experienced permaculture practitioners and educators, many of whom have been involved with Lost Valley for decades. What does a pdc offer? Our permaculture design courses can be a launching pad to an ethical livelihood in environmental or land-based jobs. You can design your current or future property, and even move on to be a professional designer or teacher. During the course, students take part in a design process for a specific site, where they get hands-on practice in designing a permaculture project. Overall, learning the principles and practices of permaculture will provide you with perspective and skills for resilience that are increasingly valuable in our changing world. Our in-person permaculture design courses follow the established international standard of 72 hours of contact time with experienced instructors, including a final group design project that weaves together everything the students have learned. DETAILED CURRICULUM REGISTER Meet your instructors Brian Byers Permaculture Lead Instructor Brian Byers is a permaculture designer, educator, and activist with over a decade of experience in sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Willamette Valley. Since 2016, Brian has served as the lead instructor for the Lost Valley Permaculture Design Course. His tenure at Lost Valley also includes roles as Garden Manager (2014–2016), Land Steward (2019–present), and Executive Director (2022–present). As a passionate advocate for building resilient communities, reconnecting individuals to the natural world, and fostering a sense of place, Brian brings a holistic, systems-based approach to all of his work. Kara Huntermoon Permaculture Lead Instructor Kara Huntermoon is our bioregional expert in wetlands Permaculture.  Her maternal family has lived in Eugene for six generations, inspiring Kara's long-term commitment to place.  Kara focused her first decade as the Land Manager at Heart-Culture Farm Community on learning how to integrate livestock into a Permaculture design, and her second decade installing a 3-acre food forest with silvopasture systems.  She brings her wealth of hand-on experience and deep relationships to every class she teaches. Author of Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. Andrew Millison – Andrew has been studying, teaching and practicing Permaculture since he took his first design course in 1996. He started teaching Permaculture at the college level in 2001, and has been an instructor at OSU in the Horticulture Department since 2009. Andrew’s popular permaculture videos have several million views and are highly recommended. Hazel Ward — Hazel is a long time resident of the Southern Oregon/Mount Shasta bioregion first settling there in the early 70’s, and has been advising farms, stewarding forests, and teaching Environmental Sciences for more than fifty years. Their focus for this 21st century has been Social Forestry, restoring Oak/Pine Savannah in Little Wolf Gulch near Ruch, OR, demonstrating natural building, fuel hazard materials utilization, multiple products woods-crafting, wildlife support and desert forest water management. This work has culminated in the 2023 book, Social Forestry, by Tomi Hazel Vaarde (Hazel’s pen name).

Being raised with Nuu-chah-nulth traditional plant knowledge she eventually found her niche growing plants and medicine while learning Western Herbal Medicine with Wild Rose College. She continued her Herbal Medicine education in Washington State learning Alchemic Herbalism through The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, then moved forward with deepening her land-based knowledge from Earth Activist Training where she became PIMA certified in Permaculture and now co- teaches in-person Certificate trainings with her mentors. Born and raised in Glennallen, Lakota’s work is deeply rooted in Ahtna Athabascan culture, land-based knowledge, and community care. Guided by permaculture principles and Indigenous ecological practices, she centers observation, reciprocity, and balance between human and more-than-human needs. As a 2025 Brave Heart Fellow, Lakota advanced her work in ethnobotany and Indigenous medicine revitalization by learning directly from Elders and knowledge holders. She focuses on ethical identification and harvesting regional medicinal plants and the preparation of traditional healing remedies using Ahtna Athabascan practices. Lakota’s work at CRNA includes native plant identification, invasive species management, habitat restoration, and food sovereignty initiatives that protect the Copper River watershed while strengthening cultural continuity. She uses a developed circular teaching model grounded in stewardship, language revitalization, and intergenerational learning. Inspired by the Ahtna principle of caring for all people “from treasured infant to honored elder,” Lakota is committed to ensuring Indigenous healing practices, ecological knowledge, and food systems remain accessible, sustainable, and community-led for generations to come. Qwiyahwult-hw (Robert George) Qwiyahwultu-hw / Robert George is a Quw’utsun’ Elder respected in the Cowichan valley for his immense generosity of sharing teachings, welcoming people of all races and cultures, and working together for Naat’sa Maat Swqualawu’un / One Heart One Mind. He is lead co-facilitator for the Cultural Connections Elder team and involved in many cultural projects including the Thu-it [Truth] exhibit, Reconciliation: The Journey of our Generation workshops and the Xpey’ Project. He is also known for his vision of the Q’ushin’tul’ Ancestors Walk, a four-day journey that has been held for four years. The walk traces a path from the Quw’utsun’ (Cowichan) creation story of the people from the sky – through T’Sou-ke territory to the top of Swuq’us (Mount Prevost).  He is a father and grandfather, and believes in the values
