Since beginning his Permaculture studies in 2011, he has dedicated his life to sharing its benefits and pioneering projects across the state. In 2018, the devastating Camp Fire destroyed the town of Paradise. Soon after, Matthew joined John D. Liu, local residents, and experts to envision ways to restore the land and livelihoods, creating a model for regeneration in disaster-affected regions. In 2019, he founded the Camp Fire Restoration Project and launched the Paradise Eco Camp – the first Ecosystem Restoration Community in the US and the world’s first mobile disaster response camp. After another major fire destroyed his family’s land two years later, he established Treetop Permaculture to support post-fire recovery in Berry Creek and Feather Falls, officially joining the global ERC movement in 2025. For the past seven years, Matthew has focused on wildfire prevention and post-fire recovery, leading workshops on fire-resilient design and restoration.
