#3 Permaculture at the Forefront
No matter the challenge, permaculture rises to meet it—and this year, we’re putting the spotlight on one of its most potent tools: biochar.
From regenerating degraded soils to reducing wildfire risk, capturing carbon to supporting local economies—designing with biochar offers scalable, elegant solutions rooted in the ethics and principles of permaculture.
Can biochar help solve our affordable housing and energy needs? Yes.
Can it transform waste into resilience and revitalize our landscapes? Absolutely.
Can it anchor circular economies in small towns and farms? Without a doubt.
The problem? The world still doesn’t see the power of what permaculture—and biochar—can do.
This is your chance to change that.
Design for impact. Design with biochar.
And submit your vision to the 2025 Permaculture Design Contest:

#4 Permaculture Design + Biochar
What challenges is your community facing right now? In mine, it’s affordable housing, polluted soils, and the need for regenerative economic development.
This is where permaculture—and biochar—shine.
Permaculture is powerful because it doesn’t just treat symptoms—it designs integrated, systemic solutions. And biochar is a tool that can address multiple issues at once: rebuilding soil, capturing carbon, reducing waste, and sparking local economies.
Can you design for more hope? More connection? Cleaner soils, thriving ecosystems, and new economic opportunities—powered by biochar?
Can we create “earth banks” in every town that sequester carbon, build fertility, and invite people back to the land?
Absolutely.
We’re permaculture designers. This is what we do.
Show us your boldest, most community-scaled biochar design today.

When I was first learning about permaculture, I desperately wanted to see it in action. Where were the real-life systems? Who was living in a passive solar home? Who had actually restored soil, captured carbon, and grown abundance?
I couldn’t find many examples near me—so I decided to start from scratch. 💪
Maybe, I thought, my site could become a demonstration for others one day.
One of the first obstacles I hit? Plants.
I needed $4–5K worth of them to implement my ⅓-acre design. I grew from seed, took cuttings, and still ended up spending thousands. (Yes, the plant obsession continues… 😆)
But what if I’d had support at the beginning?
What if I could’ve presented my design—and received $5,000 to help bring it to life?
That’s exactly the opportunity available now.
PINA’s 2025 Permaculture Design Contest is offering a $5,000 prize for the best biochar-centered design—plus a $1,000 prize for new designers.
What could your design do with that kind of boost?
Could your students rise to the occasion and share something brilliant?
Submissions open August 15–October 15, 2025.
Free to apply (PINA membership required). What do you have to lose?

When it comes to making a BIG impact in your town or bioregion, permaculture offers some of the most powerful tools on Earth. Through thoughtful design, we can transform water systems, rebuild soil, localize food, and regenerate communities.
But maybe the greatest impact of all happens in the hearts and minds of those who experience what we create… 💖
They might be moved by the elegance and beauty of natural systems designed to thrive.
They might feel the social impact of spaces that bring people together around purpose and place.
They might notice the lowered cost of living when systems provide abundance instead of bills.
And they might never even hear the word “permaculture.”
So what if your design could create that spark?
What if biochar was the catalyst—restoring soil, sequestering carbon, generating energy, and anchoring community-scale solutions that are so compelling they go viral?
That’s what the 2025 Permaculture Design Contest is here to support.
This is your moment to show what’s possible when we design with biochar—and for impact.
💥 Submissions open August 15–October 15, 2025
💰 Grand Prize: $5,000 | New Designer Award: $1,000
