POSITION SUMMARY: The Tribal Garden Coordinator is tasked with establishing, expanding, and managing all aspects of the Tribe’s Native Plant Garden and Vegetable Garden.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Establish, transplant, water, prune, fertilize, and propagate comestible native or nonnative plants that have a high nutrient density and/or medicinal qualities, and establish, transplant, water, prune, coppice, and propagate native plants used traditionally for basketry, music, and lodges.
  • Create and maintain map of gardens.
  • Collaborate with other ENR employees and other departments to host classes, workshops, and events for youth and adults.
  • Research and implement best practices in organic growing and pollinator maintenance.
  • Research and write an ID guide for the garden that includes traditional names in several Bear River Band dialects.
  • Research and test varieties of herbs and vegetables for optimal growth for local conditions.
  • Coordinate with other local gardens and work collaboratively whenever appropriate.
  • Organize summer fresh produce markets, working collaboratively with other farmers markets where feasible.
  • Maintain equipment, tools, and facilities.
  • Recruit, supervise and manage volunteers and day laborers.
  • Provide quarterly and annual reports to the Director and collaborate on grant reporting and funding.
  • Plant, inspect, and harvest all crops.
  • Maintain and manage colonies of honeybees for the production of honey.
  • Replace combs and collects and package hive products including honey, beeswax, and pollen.
  • Feed, water, groom, bathe, exercise or otherwise provide care to promote and maintain the well-being of chickens and goats.
  • Assist in organizing, planning and leading gardening workshops.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

AUTHORITY/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position may oversee Volunteers and Career Development Interns (Day Laborers).

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must have High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must have 3 years of related experience in gardening, horticultural, permaculture or related experience required.
  • Experience with beekeeping, chickens, and goats is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Shall possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by agencies insurance.
  • Must provide or obtain CPR & First Aide certification within three (3) months of hire.
  • Certification or training in master gardening or similar preferred.

COMPUTER OPERATIONS

  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.).
  • Must be able to work with American Indian people and be sensitive to their culture.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts of Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, holidays & special events as needed.
