The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is hiring a Silviculturist/Ecologist to provide statewide policy development, program management, and training for assigned program areas in the Silviculture and Ecology programs for the Division of Forestry.
This position has statewide responsibilities and could be headquartered at any Forestry Ranger Station or DNR office within the Division of Forestry’s Northeast District or Northwest District determined to be best suited for the bureau’s needs, applicant preference, and space availability. This position has statewide responsibilities, so occasional travel within the state is required.
Remote work will be available after the initial onboarding period. The exact amount is based on program need and varies seasonally.

Position Summary
This position is a technical expert and thought leader for the Division’s Silviculture and Ecology Programs, setting the pace for the Division through leadership, innovation, adaptation, best practices, and transfer of knowledge. Program areas include silvicultural and ecological expertise for the 18 forest cover types found in Wisconsin, landscape ecology, forest management plans, stand-level silviculture prescriptions, and more. The current focus of this position is in the application and evaluation of climate and landscape silviculture, including the Division’s DReAM and ASCC sites. Areas of program expertise evolve with emerging issues in forest management.
The Silviculturist/Ecologist is a key internal and external consultant for staff, leadership, inter‐divisional teams, and partner groups. This position maintains cutting‐edge knowledge and expertise by staying abreast of current research and maintaining an effective professional network. The customer base for this position is 450‐500 Division staff, including three bureaus and three districts, as well as colleagues throughout the Department and key partner groups, including corresponding programs in the US Forest Service.

Salary Information
Starting pay is $37.00 – $39.00 per hour ($76,960.00 – $81,120.00 annually).
This position is in the Forester Advanced classification. This position is in Pay Schedule/Range 15-03. A 12-month probation period may be required.
This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Job Details
Probation: A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Physical/ Environmental Factors: The position requires bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fingering, sitting, standing, talking, hearing, seeing, clarity of vision at 20 feet or more, clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, and walking on foot. Depending on the time of year, activities occur indoors and outdoors in varying amounts. During certain seasons, the Forest Ecologist/Silviculturist could be exposed to extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees F. for periods of one hour or more), and extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees F. for periods of more than one hour). Situations may arise that involve sufficient noise to require shouting in order to be heard. The person may be exposed to vibrating movements of the extremities or whole body. There may be exposure to hazards and situations (such as proximity to mechanical parts, electrical current, etc.) and/or exposure to conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin, such as fumes, odors, toxic plants (e.g. poison ivy) and/or insect bites that could result in bodily injury if not properly treated.
Travel: This position is located in the Division of Forestry’s Northeast District or Northwest District with responsibilities statewide. Travel within the area is required. Occasional overnight travel across the state will also be required.
Qualifications

Required qualifications include experience in ALL the following criteria:
Professional forest management experience related to any of the following areas:
- Silviculture, forest ecology, silvics, forest pathology and entomology, aesthetics, harvesting systems, biometrics and mensuration, forest economics, forest soils, forest hydrology, ecological classification systems, forest wildlife ecology and management, forest landscape ecology and management
Professional experience in developing training for natural resource professionals or outreach materials for the public
Preferred Qualifications Include:
Professional experience developing natural resource related policies and procedures (e.g. Administrative Codes, Manual Codes, guidance, handbooks and protocols.)
Professional experience in applied or theoretical research (e.g. research design, scientific research methods, statistics, and technical transfer of scientific results to applied management)
Professional experience in timber sale procedures, practices, and forest inventory methods (e.g. silvicultural prescriptions, site and stand assessments, design, layout, establishment, contract specifications, plot sampling, forest reconnaissance and continuous forest inventory)
Experience studying and/or applying climate-adapted silviculture and/or landscape silviculture
